BLOG #1: YES ... IT'S TIME TO PIVOT YOUR SMALL BUSINESS, AND HERE'S WHY
MY JOURNEY AS A NEW BUSINESS OWNER:
Hello to all my fellow ROCKSTAR BUSINESS MASTERS!!! In this blog, along with sharing a little bit about myself, I would love to be able to identify some relatable transformations that I experienced as a self-employed business owner.
I know for a fact that there are so many individuals that would love to find a platform to share the trials and successes of their business journey's. Because of this, I decided to travel on an intentional path and invite you to join me and experience what so many others feel but don't talk about, all in the safest of environments.
As well, I absolutely want to share all that I have learned on my business research journey... I want to take every tech tool, selling platform, and marketing tool that I have "figured out" and share it with everyone in a summarized version. Perhaps I can save you all the crazy amounts of time and frustration that I have already experienced, and simply provide you with some ANSWERS ... all in one place!!!
And now … let’s get started on the first “episode” of my BLOGGING JOURNEY :)
1. A LITTLE BIT ABOUT MYSELF ...
My name is Toni, and I am the proud owner/operator of FS Consulting ... a.k.a "my baby", which I built and developed entirely "from scratch".
When it came to post-secondary education, I would honestly have to say that I took the "less than direct" approach lol ... I absolutely knew what I wanted to do, I just wasn't sure how to get there.
After what I affectionately call the "7-years-to-nowhere" plan through the local University, where I switched my major several times, all with the intention of landing in the accounting realm, I came to the realization that I really liked everything to do with accounting, but the "grunt work" in the record-keeping world was what I truly loved ... bookkeeping was the answer for me :)
After completing the education I required to be an accounting technician, I began my career in the corporate world, which we as individuals are often "pre-programmed" to believe is the logical post-education solution. However, after many years, I realized that this choice ended up serving one true purpose only ... it provided a paycheck.
Happiness as I knew it was replaced by what I called the Monday to Friday “weekday dread". When Friday night finally arrived, I was completely exhausted, with absolutely no energy to rejoice in the fact that it was the end of the work week. Saturday became the day to squeeze in a little bit of family time, get some housework done, make supper, and then flop back into bed. Then, after an "anxious sleep", it started all over again with the "pre-game anticipation" of the next episode of “weekday dread”.
2. MY REASONS AND INTENTIONS FOR TAKING CONTROL OF MY LIFE
As a Home-Based Business Owner, I went through every recognizable stage of the business growth transformation:
(a) FIRST STAGE ... getting my first client
(b) SECOND STAGE ... working from home while taking care of our first kiddo, then adding our second kiddo to the mix ... suffocated by the frustration of functioning with no sleep
(c) THIRD STAGE ... operating a business that I absolutely LOVED while my kids were in school full-time, which allowed me to work "guilt free", and then ...
(d) FOURTH STAGE ... here I am today, trying out a new venture ... VIRTUAL BOOKKEEPING
I knew that "anything and everything ONLINE" was the way the world was heading ... and THAT was how I wanted to pivot my business.
All I had to do was figure out "how to", and yes, it has been absolutely terrifying!!! There I was, operating an amazingly success business, and now at the age of 48, I'm completely changing my direction ... what am I thinking???
3. THE TRIALS OF DESIGNING AND IMPLEMENTING A PIVOTED BUSINESS
It was weird ... my business was flourishing, and yet, I needed to tackle something "new and exciting" ... I mean, wouldn't it just make sense that I would take my home-based business and upgrade it to a virtual level ??? You know, I had so much extra time ... NOT!!!
I believed that I was the "queen of figuring things out", especially anything "techie", even if it took hours and hours ... and hours (because I'm definitely not a "natural" lol). So hey, how hard could this be???
Here was my reality however ... while I was working on my clients' bookkeeping records, I always had YouTube playing on my second monitor, subconsciously soaking it all in. I would simply pick a topic that I wanted to learn about that day, search for it on the “Tube", and that was what I binge-listened to ... all day long.
After 2 years of YouTube University, and hundreds upon hundreds of hours with my Google Companion, I was able to "figure out how to figure things out" lol ...from Web Hosting, and designing a Website, to choosing an Email Marketing System ... not to mention all the Social Media aspects ...
I was inevitably beginning to understand that "starting" this new branch of my business involved so much more than I could ever have imagined. However … I had truly made accomplishments ... I had finally scratched the surface of all the research that I was in store for. More importantly, I had managed to set up several aspects of my new business, and more importantly, I was able to do so on a shoestring budget.
Upon realizing the total amount of time I had spent simply researching the basics of starting a NEW online business, I knew that I had to do something more with my BINDERS full of information ... and this is what inspired my business blogging idea.
4. IN CONCLUSION ... FOR TODAY
It is so important for me to help other "starters" at the beginning of their business development journey. I want to save you the frustration of spending all your waking hours simply trying to figure out HOW TO do things so you can spend your time DOING those things.
I am new to blogging, however I am definitely NOT new to business building research, so I invite you to re-visit this BLOG to see all the business-building content I will be offering ... bit by bit :)
